                    Sierra Leone Poultry Project

"Give a man a chicken and you'll feed him for a day,
teach him how to raise chickens and his family will eat for a lifetime."

The Sierra Leone Project is the first long-term project established by CVMCanada.
It began in 2002 as a way for impoverished people in the war-torn country to earn an income for themselves, ultimately being able to feed their families, obtain healthcare, and educate their children.

Beginning first with a pilot poultry project, the Sierra Leone Project has expanded to include the support of 84 children at Wellington Orphanage in Freetown, the support of Andrew Kamara-- a polio victim who desires to be a doctor, and the shipment of Containers of donated goods such as books and educational materials, vocational goods, agricultural tools, poultry supplies, medical supplies, computers, etc.

The project has come a long way, but still has far to go before becoming self-sufficient.  The long-term goal is for the farmers to receive permanent income through producing chicken and/or eggs.  This would require setting up a support system which would include a hatchery, feedmill, processing plant and marketing system.

                    Wellington Orphanage

                    Picture
The Wellington Orphanage in Freetown, Sierra Leone helped inspire the Sierra Leone Poultry Project!  In 2002, when Dr. Conrad Van Dijk toured Sierra Leone after the end of the civil war, he was taken to Wellington Orphanage.  The children welcomed him singing, "We welcome you in the name of the Lord, Uncle Conrad!"  It broke his heart to hear that the orphanage was struggling to provide for these very needy children who sometimes ran away from the orphanage in search of food on the streets.  Dr. Van Dijk struggled with how God could allow His people to suffer and wondered how he, a poultry veterinarian, could help alleviate the suffering and provide a way for Sierra Leoneans to support themselves.

Today, the Wellington Orphanage is a beneficiary of the Sierra Leone Poultry Project, raising layer chickens for eggs to feed the children and to sell for other necessities.  CVMCanada has also found sponsors for the 84 children being cared for by the orphanage.  View the slide presentation (below) to find out more about the orphanage's unique ministries and sponsorship program!
